Sitting-acquired deep tissue injuries

Sitting-acquired deep tissue injuries (SADTI) are the most serious type of pressure ulcers. In order to investigate the ethiology of SADTI a new approach is under development. A musculo- skeletal model can predict forces at different seated positions and thereby find an optimum position where the risk of SADTI is minimized.



This PhD study performed by Christian Gammelgaard Olesen at Aalborg University (sponsored by RBM A/S, a Danish furniture company) focuses on validation of a musculo- skeletal model developed in the AnyBody Modeling System for predicting reaction forces on a wheelchair. A Wheelchair with force- measuring equipment has been developed, a pilot experiment has been conducted, and the experimental results were compared with the predictions of the computational model.

The preliminary results show that the model predicts changes in reaction forces due to changes in the chair posture well. It is concluded that the experimental approach is satisfactory and more experiments is now being carried out to completely validate the computational model.

Tips and tricks #14: User-defined muscle models

AnyScript, the language of The AnyBody Modeling System, comes with three pre-defined muscle models. 1 AnyMuscleModel which assumes a constant strength of the muscle. 2. AnyMuscleModel3E - a three element model taking serial and parallel elastic elements into account along with fiber length and contraction velocity. 3. AnyMuscleModel2ELin - a bilinear model taking length and contraction velocity into account.

In addition, AnyBody users also have the option of defining their own simple muscle models. This example shows an example using AnyMuscleModeUsr1 to define a muscle with contraction force depending in a user-defined way on muscle length and contraction velocity. A passive elasticity element is also included.

New AnyBody CEO

Per Sondrup, 44, has been appointed CEO for AnyBody Technology. He joins us from a position as Director at Novi Innovation, a high-tech business incubator focusing on biotech, medico, software, and materials technology. Per has been following AnyBody closely during the last 5-6 years as a Member and, more recently, Chairman of the Board. He brings senior level skills experience in general management, strategy, sales, finance, and software development acquired during 15 years in the IT industry into AnyBody. Per holds an Executive MBA from Henley Management College (UK). He has an affection for playing golf and he also enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids. Per is also a dedicated gadget guy busy at home during the midnight shift digitalizing his private home

Updated AnyBody Model repository

The new repository 7.0 contains major  improvements compared to repository 6.1 which it replaces. Several new body parts have been added including a new neck model. Also some restructuring of the models has been done to facilitate the use of the body models. The basic idea behind this has been that the body models should bring calibration and initial position settings with them when they are included into a model. This makes it easier to set up new models and reduces a common source of errors. Several new applications have been added to the library.

  • AAUCow, a leg of the cow, is motivated in a desire to improve animal welfare in the dairy industry.
  • GaitUniMiami is a validated gait model driven by optimal markers and GRF data. This milestone model takes you through the steps of converting a C3D file with measured mocap marker trajectories to an equivalent AnyBody model ofthe experiment allowing you to calculate muscle  forces, joint reactions ect. It also performs a scaling of the segments and local positioning of the markers on the bones to comply optimally with the recorded data.
  • Runner is a model of a sprint runner
  • AirlinePassenger is a model of a coach class airline passenger seat. Running this model will teach you why you are completely exhausted after an economy flight across the Atlantic!
  • Lunge investigates ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) patients
  • SeatedHumanFullWithNeck  comprises the full body model including the neck, a chair and an interface between them. The interface makes the posture of the body conform to the settings of the chair. The support between the body and the chair is made with contact elements that also provide Coulomb friction.

PhD stipend at Daimler

A PhD stipend involving AnyBody is available at Daimler AG in Boeblingen, Germany.

The team Ergonomics and Comfort at Daimler Research & Development is engaged in comfort evaluation of vehicles from view of the customers and users (human factors) and in deriving innovations. Ergonomic questions as well as evaluation of well-being and health in the vehicle are in the foreground.

To set up an authority concerning the ergonomic evaluation of vehicle concepts and several vehicle parts (e.g. doors, hood/lid, pedals) a graduate student of biomechanics is looked for who can define the ergonomic/ biomechanic justified requirements at comfort and health and translate these - together with the engineers - into product innovations.

Function (doctorate): 

  • Definition, analysis and evaluation of the aspects of comfort in particular of elderly passengers during the ingress-/egress movement using AnyBody
  • Execution / supervision and analysis of studies and test in cooperation with university institutes and partners
  • Development of comfort concepts for different vehicle categories   (passenger cars, SUV's, sports cars, vans, trucks).
  • Prototypic programming of a parametric application model (vehicle geometry) using AnyBody

Sylvain, a mechanical engineer from University of Toulouse, France, has joined AnyBody Technology to strengthen the model development, support, and consulting team. Sylvain acquired his AnyBody skills while working on a scoliosis model as an exchange student at Aalborg University.

Sebastian who holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Paderborn, Germany, has also joined AnyBody Technology to strengthen the model development, support, and consulting team.
